Our Programs

The elementary curricula used at TOKLA will include text-based sources, on-line curricula, hands-on, experiential programming, and modified curricula from multiple sources to meet learning needs.  The basic core curriculum in grades K – 5 will consist of Reading, ELA, ESOL when appropriate, Math, Science and Social Studies.  Grades K – 5 also receive instruction in Art, Health, Music, PE, Safety Education, and students will have recess and social time.  Music and art are also integrated into the core curriculum as differentiated learning tools that help, for example, with visualization/verbalization.  Multi-sensory teaching occurs regularly with this target student population.

The TOKLA middle school program will follow all required courses, credit hours and processes for promotion as defined in the Miami-Dade “Student Progression Plan 2007-08” (pg. 1 – 9) and in accordance with IEP provisions and state requirements for LEP students.  The expanded 6 – 8 course offerings will therefore include: Math, Language Arts/ESOL, Science, Social Science, computer literacy, and elective credits.  Elective Credits will include Music (choir, band/strings), Art (visual and performing arts), Foreign Language (Spanish, Hebrew, French or Italian), Physical Education and Health, and Career and Technical Education.

The high school program will also follow course requirements and the five graduation options defined in section IV of Miami-Dade’s Student Progress Plan for high school and adult education.  TOKLA is aware of the changes instated for entering 9th students for the 2007-08 school year and later.  Program offerings will include: English and English Through ESOL, ESOL elective, Mathematics, Science, History (World and American), American Government, Economics, Physical Education (and corresponding options for satisfying requirement), Life Management Skills, Performing Arts, Practical Arts, Foreign Languages (not to include religious instruction) and numerous electives.

Fundations and Wilson Reading

Fundations includes “sky writing” and gross motor memory movements that are pre-writing skills. All students will be evaluated upon enrollment and if student deficiencies are caught early and appropriate interventions are applied, many students can develop missing skills and reach grade level reading speed quickly.  All reading teachers and high school English teachers will be trained in Wilson Reading, which offers a K – 12 curriculum and is particularly good for developing skills in challenged readers.

A+ Learning

A+ Learning is an online adaptive curriculum that will serve as the common core curricula for grades K – 12.  The A+ software provides a basis for all Florida aligned subject area competencies, which permits a basis from which our staff builds individualized curriculum plans.  Teachers use a wide range of additional materials to teach content matter through diverse delivery methods.  Teachers actively teach the content presented in A+ Learning but the online software has the advantage of “go-anywhere” capacity for independent learning, practice and application.

Study Island

Study Island is a web-based state assessment preparation program for FCAT-tested subjects that is aligned with participating state standards, including Florida.  Study Island was developed using the research basis of the AAHE Assessment Forum and Advancing Student Learning through Outcomes Assessment Project at the University of Arizona.
